Critical Shifts – Columbia University GSAPP

WHOAH it has been awhile, but Futures+ is back!  We have been crazy lately, but we are excited to get back to studio with Critical Shifts a student run symposium dedicated to exploring the ongoing transformations of critical practice in architecture.  It’s happening this Saturday April 5th at Studio-X in NYC.  Futures+ might even make an appearance to check it out, and we highly suggest if you are a student in the area to check it out!  All the details on this event are after the jump.

Alex Phi project speaks for itself as an impressive exploration into the disruption and breaking of what is a monolithic structure.  The complexities come from pulling, pushes, and breaking a solid geometric form, which adds layers and depths to the organizational form.  Yet it still reads at times as a simple elegant piece.   Alex’s video is a great example of diagrammatic exploration that continues to evolve and build off each previous exploration.  We often can get stuck trying to “create architecture”, but the projects that always stick out to us are the ones that constantly explore and push without limitation.  Check it out after the jump a truly great process to learn from as a student!

Shipwreck & Fractal Cult – Burning Man

Shipwreck and Fractal Cult have made the journey from the drawing boards of studio, a kickstarter for funding, and finally all the way across the pond to construction at Burning Man.  Watching this studio has been a amazing to watch from the outside, a rare glimpse into the studio life and culture of another architecture school.  Not only that the dedication from their teachers from design to realization is rather impressive. Check out the work after the jump and make sure to check out WeWantToLearn for this years studio!

Screen Walls – Boston School of Architecture

School is back in session and so is Futures+, we can’t wait to see what comes out of this year’s studios and endless all nighters.  We look forward to seeing your projects or your fellow classmate’s asleep under their desk!   So we are kicking off the year with a project we came across awhile back by a group of students out of the Boston School of Architecture.  Screen Wall was a workshop studio exploring digital fabrication in collaboration with Radlab, a rather interesting multidisciplinary design and fabrication consulting firm.  The studio explored the field condition of a unit that could act as a ever changing screen element within the space.  The playful exploration as the wall not as a static element makes you want to push this project even further.  Check it out after the jump!

NIGHTVISION – LUKE SHEPARD

Last year F+ came across Luke Shepards Kickstarter quest to make a feature length film of his architectural time lapses.  With his original success from his first architectural night documentary he set out to capture the beauty of some the best architectural destinations in Europe. Now after 21 countries, 36 cities, 28 buildings and a couple thousand photos later we get to see Luke’s finale creation of NIGHTVISION.  Check it out after the jump!

Dystopia – Eli Keller

What if the cities we are designing today are not actually the futuristic utopias for the modern word, but rather the fragile materialistic fridges of our future dystopias? Today we are showcasing Eli Keller’s graphically stunning architectural exploration through collage into the creation of a Dystopia.  Eli Keller sees Tel Aviv as the perfect storm where this lively urban culture is slowly losing its own identity; a victim of the modern world.  You can see this in modern throughout the world, where the buildings and cities we live in have lost their sense of place.  The glass screens on our phones and the glitter of modern buildings have forced us into a blasé attitude towards the world, blinding us to the loss of our cultural identities. People are quicker to pull out a smartphone to check the time, then to look at their watch, and even quicker to go shopping on their phone then to go to a mall.  The shopping experience as we know today is rapidly disintegrating.  More people are making their purchases online and now they can do it from anywhere, no longer shopping from home.  The smartphone has allowed us to actually interact with our surrounding spaces.  Shang-Jen Victor Tung begins to look at changing the way in which we shape, organize and even stock for today’s modern shopper.  The architecture will no longer stand as a static strip mall, but will strive to connect with each customer thru digital means.  Check it out after the jump!

PriSchool – Glen Santayana

In America the concept of how prisons should work and how they are designed has greatly been overlooked, and hardly changed.  Glen Santayana took a vastly different look at how a mixture between architecture, urban planning, and a radically different approach in how we treat non-violent offenders for his PriSchool prison design.  Glen takes the idea of a prison as an institution of punishment, and flips it to  a place of reform and education.  The title is a cheeky play on words, however if we are about to pay for these inmates to sit in prison, why not educate them beyond right from wrong.  Check it out after the jump and make sure to check out Glen Santayana full thesis book at the end!
